About Hexana — WebAssembly & Binary Inspector
Hexana — an IntelliJ Platform plugin for WebAssembly and binary analysis — opens compiled artifacts as structured, navigable documents inside JetBrains IDEs.
Binary formats
• Hex editor for any file, with search and go-to-offset • WASM (.wasm): section browser, imports/exports, function types, code bodies, GC types, WIT (Component Model) interfaces, DWARF 4/5 debug info; bytes the parser cannot decode are reported per region in a Problems tab instead of failing the view; WasmGC type sections carry inline kind/field annotations, a type-info popup (Alt+click), and an interactive Type Graph tab with subtype/field-reference edges, FUNC-leaf folding, rec-group frames, depth and hops controls, stable incremental expansion, and pan/zoom canvas • Embedded core modules and nested components of a Component Model binary open recursively in their own editor views • WASM size profiler: byte-accurate size attribution of sections and functions, expanding recursively through nested Component Model submodules • Binary diff (Compare Binaries With…) for any supported format — WASM: size impact, changed entities, per-signature dispatch-table changes, and on-demand WAT compare, for core modules and Component Model binaries; native: section size impact, and for ELF, Mach-O and COFF a per-function comparison with side-by-side disassembly • Go to Source from function rows and WAT instructions to the originating line, via DWARF or source maps; call_indirect rows list their statically known dispatch candidates • ELF (.elf, .so), Mach-O (.dylib, .bundle), PE (.exe, .dll, .sys) — magic-byte detection • Multi-architecture disassembly for x86, x86-64, ARM, AArch64, RISC-V 32/64 — bundled as a Rust/WASM module, no host toolchain required, virtualized for multi-MB binaries • Archive viewer for .jar, .zip, .war, .apk, .tar, plus static libraries: Unix ar (.a) and Windows COFF import libraries (.lib); gzip-compressed files of supported kinds (.wasm.gz) open directly • Network captures: pcap and pcapng packet viewer, with HTTP response bodies openable in their own tabs • Android DEX (.dex) with string-table extraction • Columnar data: Parquet (.parquet) and Arrow (.arrow) — schema, metadata, row groups / record batches, decoded column data • Protocol Buffers: FileDescriptorSet files (.desc, .protoset, .pb), plus a schema-less Open As Protobuf Message wire decoder for opaque payloads • JVM JIT viewer: a JVMTI agent attaches to any Java run configuration, captures compiled methods into a .jit file, and renders them with a symbol tree and per-method disassembly
Language support
• WAT (WebAssembly Text Format): PSI-backed parser, syntax highlighting, brace matching, find-usages, documentation • WIT (Component Model interface language): inspections, formatting, completion, go-to-definition, indexing • Java: completion and navigation for GraalWasm and Chicory APIs • JavaScript / TypeScript: type inference for WebAssembly.instantiate(...) imports and exports, resolved from the referenced .wasm file
Debugging
• Line breakpoints in WASM run configurations under Node.js and browsers, wasmtime 44+ (its built-in gdbstub), and WAMR (debug-interpreter builds) • Wasm debugger tab: the paused function disassembled to WAT with the exact current instruction highlighted, per-instruction Step Over / Step Into, and the operand stack (live values where the runtime serves them, statically reconstructed origins otherwise) • Conditional breakpoints, inlined call frames, and variables stored in linear memory, all resolved through DWARF • Managed wasi-sdk installation: WASM debugging needs an LLDB with the wasm process plugin, and the WebAssembly settings page downloads and verifies one, shared across projects and JetBrains IDEs
Scripting
• Script tabs run JavaScript against the open binary: binary.functions(), .imports(), .exports(), and format-agnostic members (format, size, structure, strings, sizeAnalysis); results render as tables or log output in a side panel. Sandboxed, with a timeout and bounded output. • hexana.defineCheck(id, fn) declares named checks whose findings appear in the Problems tab and in SARIF 2.1.0 output; hexana.defineFlags(schema) adds typed per-run parameters • Hexana Suite run configuration for *.test.js files: describe/test/beforeEach/afterEach with async support, artifact role binding, seeded deterministic crypto, and an ESM loader for bare-specifier imports from node_modules. Results stream into the SM test console with navigation to call sites, Rerun Failed, and Copy CLI Command. • Gutter run icons on test() and describe() calls; Run Suites for This Binary in the binary editor context menu matches suites to the open file by declared artifact role • The run_script_suite MCP tool and CLI command run suites headlessly with JUnit XML report output
