About Assay by The Meridian Lab
Stop AI agents from polluting your GitHub projects
Automated agents now submit issues, open pull requests, and post comments at scale across GitHub. Assay detects them automatically — before they waste your maintainers' time or corrupt your project history.
Install in one click. No configuration. No code changes.
How it works
When a new issue, PR, or comment arrives on a repository where Assay is installed, Assay scores it against 13 behavioral signals across three tiers:
• Tier 1 — Zero false positive: Patterns that cannot appear in genuine human writing. One match = high confidence flag. • Tier 2 — Behavioral: Machine-consistent timing, superhuman response speed, ghost author patterns. Two or more required before Assay speaks. • Tier 3 — Linguistic: LLM vocabulary, sentence uniformity, AI opener structure. Score boosters only — never sufficient alone.
Real contributors pass silently. Assay only posts a comment when it has something to say.
What you get
When a suspicious submission is detected, Assay posts a comment with:
• A 0–100 probability score • The specific signals that fired • An ai-generated or possibly-ai-generated label
Submissions scoring below 40 pass with no comment. The threshold is conservative by design.
Designed to protect real contributors
The tiered architecture ensures false positives are rare. Medium-confidence signals (LLM vocabulary, sentence uniformity) cannot flag a submission on their own — they only boost a score already elevated by higher-confidence signals. A human contributor who writes carefully and professionally will pass silently.
Permissions
Assay requests the minimum permissions required:
• Issues (read/write): To read issue content and post findings • Pull requests (read/write): To read PR descriptions and post findings • Metadata (read-only): Required by GitHub for all Apps
Assay does not request access to repository code, secrets, or any other data.
