About Chart Preview
Chart Preview deploys your Helm charts to Kubernetes environments on every PR. Get a unique preview URL, automatic TLS, PR status checks, and cleanup when the PR closes.
No preview infrastructure to manage — install the app, add a workflow, and previews are created automatically.
Works with namespace-scoped Helm charts, including web apps, APIs, databases, and full-stack applications.
Teams that already run mature preview pipelines via Argo CD, Flux, or Helmfile may not need it.
Capabilities
• Deploy Helm-based applications to isolated Kubernetes namespaces on every pull request • Automatic preview URL per PR (for example: pr-123-myapp.previews.chart-preview.com) • Supports chart sources from Git repositories, OCI registries, and TGZ archives • GitHub Check Runs with deployment status and logs • Automatic cleanup when a PR is closed or merged
Benefits
• No preview infrastructure to manage: Chart Preview provides the Kubernetes cluster, ingress, and TLS • Faster PR reviews: Reviewers can validate changes on a live environment • Automatic lifecycle: Previews deploy on push, expire via TTL, and clean up automatically • Secure isolation: Each preview runs in its own namespace with network policies and resource limits
Getting Started
Chart Preview supports two workflows:
• Helm chart development – Deploy the chart from the PR branch for review. • App development with published charts – Deploy your image using a published Helm chart (your own or third-party).
What you need
• A GitHub repository • A Helm chart in your repo, or a reference to a published chart
Setup
• Install the Chart Preview GitHub App • Follow the onboarding PR instructions • Open a pull request — your preview deploys automatically
Permissions and Data Access
Chart Preview requires the following GitHub permissions:
• Pull requests (read/write): detect PR events and post preview status updates • Repository contents (read/write): fetch Helm charts from the PR branch • Checks (read/write): report deployment status and surface logs on the PR • Actions (read): read workflow context for CI integration • Organization members (read): determine installation context • Metadata (read): required by GitHub for repository identification
Access is limited to what is required to create ephemeral preview environments and report their status.
